Hadeel Al-Qudsi : Self-observation and Goal setting .. A message for young youth and Adults

Follow your purpose; chase your dreams; set your goals; if there is a will there is a way. I know it sounds like a cliché, because these sentences have always recurred around us, but not yet instilled. It seems there is a problem of dysfunctionality.

The reason behind choosing this topic was not only because I needed to define my goals, rather because I needed to dig deep inside myself; understand it, apply some self-discipline; and figure out the impact of this understanding on my performance, to be more specific when I found myself late in pursuing certain goals due to challenges that delayed my progress, I spoke to myself, I coached it, I observed my movements, until I’ve got inspired by speeches and articles talking about goal setting, self-efficacy and performance.

While browsing the internet, we would find many pages talking about common mistakes in goal setting, for me, the most critical are the following two, if we grasp them, other goal setting steps will fall in line easily.

Number one: When it comes to goals setting, many people are unable to identify the starting point. (They don’t know how to start because they don’t realize what they want) At first, the process consumes their minds because of the many possibilities they want to achieve, until they get overwhelmed and slack off, which would deflect their focus away from the main ultimate goal,

Number two: the repetitive shift between failure and trial then another failure and frustration, (what happens to them?) they get crushed by the sense of difficulty to achieve and succeed.

It is pretty influential that the goal reflects an inherent desire, take the time to record it, examine its effectiveness and analyze how things went wrong during performance. This brings to my mind the theory of self-regulated learning of Bandura & Schunk; which I felt that it is related to my topic somehow and its method capitalizes on:

* Self-observation that stimulates behavioral change when performance is impaired

* Self-judgment by comparing current behavior to achieve the desired goal

* Self-interaction with the achievement of the goal, the positive progress in achieving the goal motivates behavior to set the goals of greater challenges

Following these steps may open our eyes to review and change the strategy, which will in turn be the cornerstone for proper planning, and
