New Mexico State Police reported that two truck drivers died in a fiery semi-tractor trailer crash in Lea County Sunday morning.
According to State Police reports, a semi driven by David Elvis Holt, 62, of Bastrop, Texas, was traveling east on NM 128, northwest of Jal, when he pulled into the westbound lanes to avoid collision with another eastbound semi that had slowed down to make a right turn.
State Police reported that Holt’s semi collided head-on with a westbound semi driven by Ever Menchaca, 40, of Hobbs. Both trucks caught fire. Holt and Menchaca were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the collision, which remains under investigation.
